[I found this while searching back through my blog for another post - it was a response to a reply I had gotten on a post, but I felt that, in light of our recent discussions about the reboot/representation in future Trek, maybe I should share it…
THIS THIS THIS ALL OF THIS
I also spent a lot of my young years being simultaneously righteously angry and begrudginly grateful to Berman and Braga - they gave us a lot of great Trek, but they did nowhere near enough to live up to the legacy Gene began. And I think that in a lot of ways, the decision to make Enterprise, and to go backwards instead of forwards in time for the first time in Trek history, was a big part of their mistake. They said they were tired of telling 24th century stories, that there was nothing new to tell after three series and four movies - but I say they were afraid. They were afraid that moving forward and continuing to expand the Trek universe would be too daunting, too challenging, and (crucially) not lucrative enough - because it would involve real innovation, real efforts to extrapolate and reflect current culture in future stories. Instead they opted to circle back in on themselves and tell the same old stories in the same old ways, calling them new again because they were being done in the past, before the stories we knew. That’s not innovation - that’s stagnation. And it’s a state that’s continued through to Abrams’ films, especially STID.
Today ilikeyourstuffs told me she thinks that Star Trek needs a good long break, like a decade, so that it can come back and truly be fresh and new. I’m starting to agree - and I hope that if it does go away and come back again, the people running it return to the core of Gene’s vision, and start boldly going again.
I completely agree.
People said for a long time, when Voyager started to stagnate and then Enterprise followed along, that Star Trek needed a good long break. Hell, Ron D Moore said it, so it wasn’t just the fans.
But as far as I’m concerned, what Star Trek really needs is another Gene. Whether that’s tomorrow or in ten years, the series is never going to be fresh and new unless there are people willing to make it fresh and new.
After all, it was revived and rebooted after 4 years and all we got was JJ and his team’s pop culture parody of Trek. So who’s to say that, even if it was off the air for a decade or two, it wouldn’t just be revived by yet more people who didn’t really get it?
Enterprise actually improved in its fourth season - why? Because Manny Coto came on as showrunner and actually started letting the show live up to its potential.
So I firmly believe that its the people making it - the people in charge, making the decisions about what it’s going to be - that define what Star Trek is.
And until the people come along who want Star Trek to boldly go again, it’s just going to keep on giving us the same old same old.
its a beautiful night the stars are out and fifty years ago today six and a half million people watched susan foreman smile brightly as she put a human skull on top of a torch

I love your blog and as much as I like the information you have already supplied, I am more into writing scripts than books. Do you have anything on script writing, anything at all?
Script Frenzy has a bunch of resources for beginners.
